Introduction

Asian Leadership Programme (ALP) is developed by the International Design Institute of Zhejiang University, an English summer school targeting SUTD students. Successful applicants will be invited to visit Zhejiang University and take part in specially developed design practices and internships that include design workshops, cross-cultural communications, and practical works in innovation and entrepreneurship. Over the past five years, a cumulative total of 529 students have been enrolled in this 14-week-long program, produced over 200 pieces of design works. News reports about this program have been covered by Lianhe Zaobao of Singapore, Xinhua News Agency, and other Chinese and foreign media.

Design Thinking & Expression: THIS IS A BOOK

This is a Book is the theme of Design Thinking and Expression for Asian Leadership Programme 2018 of
Singapore University of Technology and Design with technical support (Printed Paper Actuator) provided by Morphing Matter Lab at Carnegie Mellon University. By learning 3D printing and the principle of thermoplastic, 53 students designed 20 books within two and a half weeks. Each book has a theme, for example, this book is a transformation; this book is falling water; this book is hungry; this book is a lock, etc.

Campus Asia Design Workshop 2018

Campus Asia, short for Collective Action Exchange Program for Asia University Students, is a project led by the governments of China, Japan and South Korean to promote the exchanges and cooperation among Chinese, Japanese and South Korean Universities and students’ communication. During the ALP 2018 project, SUTD students were invited for the workshop. Based on the cooperation with the students from all three countries, SUTD students finally completed the design of various themes and presented the outstanding design results. Through the workshop, students felt the difference of culture and the ideas collision from different countries, provided solutions to the practical problems faced by enterprises under the guidance of the designers, and studied valuable practical experience.

Internship Project - Information Box

Our internship research is based on the professional background of architecture. The project is divided into two parts. The first is about cognition and visit. It helps students understand the ancient water towns in Southern Yangtze River, the traditional architecture, the Chinese architecture and the urban environment. The second is to combine the design topic "information box" to understand the design and assembly process of prefabricated buildings, helping them understand the nature of the work, the process and working methods of the construction industry. At the same time, we visit the assembly design company and promote skills about internship design and preliminary training design. Through these two parts, we help students understand the related relationship between architectural design and society, technology and the environment.
