lux band

LUX BAND is the first design I did in SUTD. In course 3.007 Introduction to design, we are required to design a wearable product which can help people's daily lives. Utilizing knowledge we have learned, including math, physics, CAD, circuits design, 3D print and even the sociology theories, we designed this product.

Motivation / Product Overview

Opportunistic predatory crimes, such as robbery and sexual assault, occur on streets throughout the world, causing physical, emotional and/or social trauma to victims involved.

Lux Band addresses this problem by shining a bright light to disorient the aggressor before the crime is committed. Lux band is a low-profile wearable worn on the user’s wrist and when activated with a button, it shines 1000 lumens of luminous flux at the aggressor. This produces a blind spot in the aggressor’s field of vision, lasting for a few minutes. The blind spot exists at the positions where the aggressor directs his focus, therefore reducing his ability to perform any actions in the direction of his field of vision. The blinding light provides the user with an opportunity to get away from the aggressor and break any physical contact.

Lux Band empowers women, children and elderly with the ability to protect themselves and walk on the streets with confidence and independence. It is also a multifunctional wearable that doubles as a smartwatch and is designed with aesthetics, human ergonomics and convenience in mind for discreet everyday use.

When used appropriately, the Lux Band provides a legal and easily accessible method of disorienting an aggressor. Ultimately, we wish to reduce the occurrences of such crimes not only through its use-value as a reaction to aggression, but also through its very presence in the market acting as a deterrent. We envision a world with fewer assaults and less worry. One that is safer. One where anyone can live their life boldly.
